The term sits at the center of a long methodological argument. Older scholarship often looked for direct survivals: an African dance here, a ritual there, a linguistic trace somewhere else. The Birth of African-American Culture: An Anthropological Perspective challenged that habit by arguing that isolated inventories can miss the more important question of how new cultures were built under slavery.
