Mintz and Price introduced the term to shift the debate away from simple inventories of Africanisms. Their point was not that content does not matter. It was that content alone can mislead. The same underlying habits of relation, obligation, call-and-response, or ritual sequencing might persist even after languages, names, and visible forms have changed.
