Plymouth was the Grand-Anse area of southern Saint-Domingue whose name preserved the memory of the maroon leader Plymouth Maroon, killed in 1730 after major attacks in the region. In the vault it functions as both geography and memory: a southern refuge zone and a landspace marked by marronage.
The region of the southern peninsula that retained his name after his death — a geographic trace of his band's occupation and resistance.
