Le Maniel was the best-known maroon complex on the southern Hispaniola frontier, a community or cluster of communities that survived for generations by exploiting bad terrain, Spanish protection, and frontier trade. It belongs less to a simple story of treaty-recognized autonomy than to a harder story of cross-border survival, negotiation, and partial accommodation.
