Igbo

The Igbo's presence in Saint-Domingue contributed to the colony's African cultural diversity, bringing specific linguistic, religious, and social practices that mixed with other African traditions and European colonial culture in the process of Creolization. Like other African ethnic identities, "Igbo" took on new meanings in the diaspora - both as a way enslaved people maintained African identity and as a category imposed by enslavers in the Atlantic slave system.
