Saint-Marc was one of the revolution's key political ports, a place repeatedly used to assemble rival authorities: the all-white Assembly of Saint-Marc of 1790, the mixed-race Council of Peace and Union of 1792, and later the counter-revolutionary realignments that opened parts of the West to foreign occupation.
