The Trou Coffy insurgency (1791–1792) was the West Province revolutionary movement led by Romaine Rivière from his mountain base between Jacmel and Léogane, combining Catholic prophecy, Marian devotion, Kongo-linked mediumship, and armed insurgency against white plantation authority. Insurgents at one point took effective control of Léogane, making this one of the most formidable early revolutionary movements in the west. The movement's distinct sacred politics — joining Catholic and African-derived logics — widen the religious archive of the Haitian Revolution beyond any single ceremony or tradition.
