This note exists because the language of royalism appears too often in the early archive to be dismissed, but too strategically to be read literally in every case. Captives, colonists, and later historians repeatedly report insurgents saying that they had orders from great whites in France, that they were avenging the king, or that a decree granting the enslaved more rights had been suppressed by colonial authorities.
