Also known as: Toussaint Louverture, Toussaint letter to Commandant of Fort de Joux, Toussaint protest letter November 1802
Last updated: April 16, 2026
Toussaint Louverture's letter of protest to the Commandant of Fort de Joux, November 1, 1802, objecting to the confiscation of his watch, money, and spur and demanding they be preserved for his wife and children: 'Nothing is stronger than the humiliation I received from you today.' The letter is misdated 1792 in the original — possibly evidence of a man losing track of time in prison — and stands as one of the most intimate and defiant documents of his captivity.
