Also known as: Toussaint Louverture, Toussaint letter to Biassou 1791, Toussaint earliest letter
Last updated: April 16, 2026
The earliest known letter by Toussaint Louverture, written two months after the August 1791 uprising and signed 'General Doctor,' showing him coordinating with Spanish forces, managing spy networks, and planning mountain defenses — already a strategic thinker before his emergence as a military commander. The letter contains one of the only contemporary documentary traces of Boukman's name, referred to here as 'Bouqueman.'
