Issued ten days after the Battle of Vertières and the French evacuation treaty of November 19, 1803, this joint proclamation by Dessalines, Christophe, and Clervaux announced the end of French rule and the imminent birth of a new state. It appeared in the Aurora General Advertiser of Philadelphia on January 5, 1804, becoming one of the earliest announcements of Haitian independence to reach American audiences.
