Vertières is a plain on the outskirts of Cap-Haïtien (then Cap-Français) in northern Haiti, site of the final major battle of the Haitian Revolution. On November 18, 1803, Haitian forces under Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Henri Christophe defeated the French expeditionary army commanded by General Rochambeau. The victory at Vertières compelled Rochambeau to surrender Cap-Français, and the French fleet evacuated on November 19. Dessalines declared independence on January 1, 1804. Vertières is commemorated as a national holiday (November 18) in Haiti and represents the military culmination of thirteen years of revolutionary struggle.
