Grande-Anse was the far southwestern region of Saint-Domingue's South Province, a mountainous and difficult-to-control zone that appears in the vault in two sharply different roles: in 1793 as a bastion of colonial counter-revolution and in the longer revolutionary afterlife as one of the peninsula's most durable spaces of maroon and peasant autonomy.
