Port city on the western coast of Haiti, site of the proclamation of Haitian independence on January 1, 1804. Dessalines chose Gonaïves for the declaration, and the city is known as the 'City of Independence' (Cité de l'Indépendance). The Acte de l'Indépendance was signed here. Gonaïves is Haiti's fourth-largest city and the capital of the Artibonite department.
