Cape Coast Castle was one of the major fortified points on the Gold Coast where captive Africans were confined, inspected, and held before Atlantic shipment. In the vault, it matters less as architecture alone than as a threshold site where the violence of the trade became concrete: dungeons below, surf outside, guns above, and ships waiting offshore.
