Camp Turel was a fortified insurgent position in the mountain corridor stretching from Gonaives toward the Central Plateau and the Spanish frontier. It is historically important because it is the place from which Toussaint Louverture issued the proclamation of 29 August 1793 under the public name "Louverture."
