Henri Christophe ordered and oversaw the construction of the Citadelle Laferrière, a massive mountaintop fortress in northern Haiti, beginning around 1805 and continuing through his reign until 1820. Built with forced labor of Haitian peasants and soldiers, the Citadelle sits atop a mountain near Milot and was designed to defend Haiti against a feared French re-invasion. It could house 5,000 troops and stored enough provisions to withstand a siege of a year. The construction cost thousands of lives. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most recognizable monument in Haiti. Christophe also built the Sans-Souci Palace nearby during the same period.
Ordered the construction of the massive hilltop fortress as a defense against potential French recolonization.
Sans-Souci and the Citadelle were constructed in the same era as part of Christophe's monumental building program
