Last updated: April 26, 2026
The Battle of Ravine-à-Couleuvres on February 23, 1802 was a major engagement during the Leclerc Expedition in which Toussaint Louverture's forces fought the French near the Ravine-à-Couleuvres gorge in the Artibonite region. It was one of the bloodiest battles of that campaign. Toussaint's army used the difficult terrain effectively but was ultimately forced to withdraw. The battle demonstrated the capacity of the Haitian forces to inflict massive casualties on the invading French army despite the numerical and logistical superiority of Leclerc's troops.
One of the last major battles before Toussaint's capture. Fought against Leclerc's expeditionary force.
