Also known as: Capture of Toussaint, Toussaint's arrest, Gonaïves conference betrayal
Last updated: April 26, 2026
On June 7, 1802, Toussaint Louverture was arrested by French General Jean-Baptiste Brunet under a flag of truce at Ennery, following negotiations that had ended the first phase of the Leclerc Expedition. Toussaint had surrendered to French authority in May 1802 on terms that preserved his position, but Brunet invited him to a conference and had him seized. He was transported to France and imprisoned at Fort de Joux, where he died in April 1803. The treacherous arrest became a rallying symbol for the continued Haitian resistance.
Toussaint was seized by General Brunet under the pretext of a negotiation meeting and deported to France.
