In August 1382, Duke Władysław Opolczyk brought the icon to Poland. According to legend, while passing through Częstochowa, his horses refused to move. A dream advised him to leave the icon at Jasna Góra ("Bright Mountain"), where Pauline monks established a shrine in 1386.
