Moreau de Saint-Méry — Gallica Collection Author Biography Médéric-Louis-Élie Moreau de Saint-Méry (1750–1819) was a white Creole lawyer, colonial official, and encyclopedist born in Martinique. He served as a councillor on the Conseil Supérieur du Cap-François (Saint-Domingue's northern high court), making him both a practicing lawyer in the colonial system and an intimate observer of its social life. He was a member of the Cercle des Philadelphes at Cap-François — the colony's learned society — and later president of the Musée de Paris.
