Matthewson — Chapter Notes
Source: matthewson proslavery foreign policy
Preface (pp. vii–x)
Matthewson states the book's purpose plainly: to show that the proslavery policies of Washington, Jefferson, and other Founding Fathers shaped US engagement with the Haitian Revolution, and to trace how the US sought to influence post-independence Haiti. He writes in the spirit of Frederick Douglass, whose 1893 speech at the World's Columbian Exposition defended Haiti as a symbol of Black freedom worldwide.
