Chapter notes: gaffield declaration ch notes
Graph review in this pass: Created gonaives, francois capois, and juste chanlatte; strengthened haitian declaration of independence, boisrond tonnerre, dessalines declaration copies, dessalines declaration english translation, and haiti doi index Overview This is the vault's strongest single source for treating the Haitian Declaration of Independence as both a political event and a material document. The volume grew out of Julia Gaffield's 2010-2011 discovery of the only known surviving official printed copies in British archives, but its real value is larger than the discovery story. It reconstructs the declaration as a layered act of sovereignty: a ceremony in gonaives, a text shaped by secretaries and generals, a printed object produced for circulation, and a statement read against Atlantic law, diplomacy, religion, and memory.
